Please explain the concept to a non cloud pro

I am a manager of a company wanting to base our software solutions in the cloud. I need clarification as to how these initiatives and seemingly lacking standards will affect my company in the future. My concerne right now is that the cloud solutions a back to where we were in the eighties: islands of information with zero integration.

What may I expect in terms of integration?

What is 'internal cloud' as opposed to 'external cloud'?

And I may have other concerns yet to emerge on my horizon.
