Open Source Community has different goals.
Although both produce software, Open Source communities have a different focus than large proprietary software corporations. This is neither "good" nor "bad". It simply is. In my opinion, both are necessary to drive the overall industry forward.

Advertising and Marketing are vital to corporations, which view final sales and share-holder profits as important factors.

Open Source, in contrast, cares about high-quality design and community involvement ... profit is secondary (if considered at all).

These different goals lead to different strategies, which is why there isn't the same level of sales-weasels constantly calling you on the phone and yapping in your ear.

Companies must keep up the noise about their products in order to stay in business (which, itself, is a rather important part of being in business in the first place). Communities don't have this pressure.

This is simply a case of different goals requiring different tactics.

Just my $0.02 USD.

Regards,
Jon
