Because customers have a right to know what's really going on
Why? Don't you want to know what was really wrong with your car when you take it to the shop? Or do you just blindly trust whatever the mechanic says? Is the mechanic just doing a quick fix like squirting grease on a squeaky part or is the problem really solved? Personally, I want to know since it could point to further problems down the road or issues I need to keep an eye on.

It's fair to point out that I don't know the particulars of this problem. But it's also true that Seagate will probably never come clean on what's really going on inside their drives. I'm not picking on Seagate; no company will ever put itself through that kind of a PR storm if it's a hardware issue and they can fix it with a fw workaround. It happens all the time with computers in general. But on the other side, as a customer you have a legitimate right to get the real truth.

All I was doing was pointing out that simple fact. Since Seagate will probably never tell its customers what's really going on unless there's an extraordinary amount of pressure put on them, it's only fair to point out their "explanation" may not be the true story. Why would you blindly trust a company that won't give you the full story?
