I couldn't help but notice that Mr. Harris is a vocal desktop RAID detractor. He is certainly entitled to his opinion -- and I admit mine is colored by my own positive long-time experience with desktop striped arrays -- but this is the kind of commentary that drives me nuts:

"If they are in a critical RAID system you should make sure your backups are current and complete."

So... let me get this right. If you are running a critical non-RAID system, you can forgo current and complete backups?

Forgive me for my mini-rant, but I'm troubled by this kind of thinking. Yes, mathematical MTBFs degrade in any array of identical devices, but that's because the individual MTBFs are non-infinite to begin with. Keep those backups current and complete... period.
