You are missing some points
I have no personnal knowledge of recent releases of Mac OS, but had one with 10.2, and from what I read, it seams that things are following the same trend.

Mac OS has fewer ISV than windows has, and the operating system is far more closed than windows is. If you only take the exemple of Java VM, the only provider of VM is apple itself, and apple only ships new functionnality for new releases of the operating system.

If I get back to my personnal story, I was sticked to a deprecated java VM, and unable to run any application requiring a newer version. Likewise many new application when shipping were requiring recent OS releases, and my choices were either to upgrade ( i-e buy a new OS ) or not use the applications. Given that the release rate is quite high, that would mean upgrading every other year. Even ignoring the cost that is quite cumbersome.

At the same time, while hiding behind marketing brands ( I do like felines, mind you), apple introduce huge technological gaps between releases ( processor migration, 32/64 bit piece by piece migration ... ) that make it difficult for software developper to keep on suporting older releases.


What is astonishing thought, is that proctices that would bring outcries done by microsoft, only earns apple general approval...
