I agree that Craigslist is sapping newspapers of the cash flow lifeblood that sustains the journalism product that they produce.

This is truly a sad situation, because quality journalism isn't free. At some point, we may be reduced to McNews, or YouTube-like news where anyone will post"news" to a web site and that's what we'll have instead of the newspaper.

Like so many other web sites that result in disintermediation
of the real world, Craigslist was bound to happen sooner or
later. Newspapers have to undergo a painful downsizing to adapt to it. Part of that adaptation could include a culling of the ranks of print media, a privatization (to avoid having to deal with the varies of Wall Street), and an exit from the industry of thousands. What's happening at the Tribune Co. is illustrative.

The ultimate savior could be rich Americans, the ranks of whom are increasing as we speak. Some of these people have seen it fit to give back by acquiriing the local media and subsiizing it and leaving its management alone, so the media can continue to do its function.
