- That's what I've found about online journalism. When I was at the Financial Times we wrote to fill space. We had 200 and 450 word news stories, 650 word news analysis, 1200 word features, etc. We filled "holes" in the page. If a news story was only worth 200 words but we had a 450 word news story hole to fill-- we stretched it out. Online, where there is near infinite amounts of space, brevity is rewarded. And it is amazing how much content can be cut while a lot of information is communicated.
