Actually the net worm is much older than that!

If you really want to get down to it, the history of the "Internet" worm goes back much further than Morris's worm. One notable implementation of networked worm technology was demonstrated at PARC on Alto machines (a predecessor of the Star workstations), although this built on earlier implementations of the idea going back to the beginnings of the ARPANET. In fact worm technology is utilized in most distributed computing paradigms.

FYI - the name "worm" came from a science fiction story, The Shockwave Rider, by John Brunner. An excellent story which is still in print and readily available.
