I'm 99% sure my router doesn't do DNS
Do Linksys et al just pass you off or do they function as stripped down DNS servers as well?

I've just got a WRT54G and I'm 99% sure that it has no DNS capabilities. If you use the router as the DHCP server, whatever name server addresses you configure in your router simply get sent to the client when it broadcasts a query for network settings. All clients are therefore configured to query your ISP's name servers directly.
