I believe that Halvar admitted to not knowing a ton about DNS. See, that's what really sucks about this attack is that, DNS has some black magic (not really, but stuff the average person won't understand for sure) that could really be useful or the missing piece, but essentially, most people understand the basics of how DNS works. This is probably why Dan was so concerned about asking the security researcher population to hold off on theories... just trying to buy as much time as possible.
