It must be obvious that he would have been very likely to have weighed the pros/cons of his escape. Therefore, there had to be a very large reward for taking such a risk. That means that
he must have hidden away a huge fortune, perhaps in some remote place where he was not totally confident that the funds would remain intact. He is not a stupid man. In his business and with his resources he would have taken years to establish 'a way out'.
