"AOL IM is not SMS"
This is an important thing to note.

One is not bypassing anything by using a "substitute". SMS message fees are outrageously high and highly profitable for phone companies. Just because people can use something else that provides a similar function doesn't mean it is a problem for Apple or AT&T. It may make them realize that they should charge a reasonable fee (like perhaps $0.01 per message?) for a reasonable service, not jack us for our hard-earned dollars when it costs them nearly nothing on their side.
