I found that a fully patched windows XP SP2 with IE6 or IE7 and Windows Media Player 9 (default) will open any page of your choice in less restrictive Internet Explorer environment even if your default browser is Firefox, Opera or anything else you have in place. Let me translate this for you. It means that even if you are running Firefox and you think that you are secure, by simply opening a media file, you expose yourself to all IE vulnerabilities there might be.

Agreed. I've seen that behavor all the way back when I first started with Win2k. That's why I always consult people the 3 malware breeders of Windows is IE, Outlook express, and Media player, then I show them freeware, SECURE alternatives to it, and lock these programs out in the firewall. (Anymore however, due to some company web sites that insist on IE, I sandbox IE with either greenborder, or Sandboxie. But the others are still not allowed to access the internet at all.

This is why MS shouldn't put in IE, OE, or MP in the OS. They considered security a joke (and I think still do.)
