I hope cell phone companies are upset enough
I really hope cell phone companies are getting upset enough to change their slavery, er, subscription plans. Frankly, cell phone "contracts" are some of the worst contracts in the business. I don't know of any other business that makes you pay to stop using their services.

Not to mention the article is right - the data plans are horrific. I'd much rather spend an hour at a wi-fi hotspot than a minute surfing the internet on a cell phone.

What the cell phone service providers simply do not get is that there are people who do want to spend a good deal of time on the Internet and be able to do stuff like download and watch movies.

But they really don't get it. They think that data should be some premium thing for the rich and famous, so they charge horrendous rates and we're stuck looking elsewhere to get our Internet.

Great job at overpricing it so you miss most of a large market.

Anyways, now something about the hardware:

"The entry of GPU guru Nvidia is an indication of just how important graphics processing is becoming in the mobile market."

I think if CPU/GPU companies can somehow create a mobile version of multicore technology, they can perhaps fit a CPU and GPU on the same chip. If they can do that, then perhaps they'll be able to get some real media intensive stuff on their hardware and show the carriers what people really want to do with their portable devices.

Another note: Expect an ARM vs "Silverthorne" battle in the future. Since it's basically a x86 variant, a lot of software companies - okay, Microsoft will like the idea of not rewriting a lot of software to run on a different architecture.

It'll be a big battle for sure, since ARM is very well established in smaller devices. But with Intel and probably Microsoft backing it, I'm sure that Silverthorne has a good chance of significantly weakening ARM's market share.

I'm not going as far as to say it'll kill ARM, though - that'll probably something that will be done in Moorestown or another generation of the architecture.
