What about the future
It's all about IBM enabling a business desktop alternative OS.

MS is not going to dilute their desktop advantage by porting their applications to
the big competitor Linux. IBM is offering an alternative acceptable to business with
support for all major desktop OSes.

Just a Firefox on windows is important to the Linux desktop, forces web designers
to not rely on IE functionality, Symphony provides on more option. Being free also
exerts pressure on MS margins - and given all of MS profits come from windows
and Office the future doesn't look so positive.
