Nice thought but...
I must admit, Microsoft's email server proliferation is mind bogglingly confusing. But let me put it in terms that I can grok. To assist an Exchange server in doing what it should have done all along (filter spam, viruses, etc.) MSFT would like you to by a pre-exchange server called a Hub Transport and and a pre-pre Exchange server called Edge Transport and if that does not do the trick buy a pre-pre-pre Exchange server service in the cloud. I see how that might help Microsoft sell more software but I would love to meet the email manager that can even grasp this insanity.

Using servers for network functions is, as a rule, a really bad idea. Servers for handling email are just fine. Servers for handling network traffic are just not good enough.

This is a great time to be PostPath. They give the enterprise one of their first chances to break the shackles with MSFT and end the Exchange insanity.

Look at Microsoft's lack of execution with the ISA server if you are worried about MSFT impacting markets for gateway filtering/security appliances.
