A General Management Issue?
To me, the biggest roadblock to change is treating this as a supply
chain or IT issue and not a general management issue. Most
companies today function in a networked world, where they are
critically dependent on other companies. The dependence goes way
beyond "supply chain." The problem is that we have not upgraded our
managerial tools in recognition of this fact. It is almost like we are
back in the early 1980s, completely unaware of the Lean tsunami that
was heading our way - and which bankrupted many companies. There
too, the challenge was not adopting SPC or JIT, it was the
organizational changes and the mindset changes needed to make
these work. A handful of companies - like Nokia - are dealing with
this effectively. My book, The Spider's Strategy, addresses the changes
such companies are making in strategies, processes, organization,
values, and technologies. Without such broad transformative changes,
many companies will be badly affected in the months and years
ahead.
