I have to second something you say, or that I understood, in your post.

I understand the many resources and complexities of getting referenceable customers for software organizations. However, in this day and with customer advocacy becoming a hot topic (with proper disclosures and without sponsorship), why won't software houses go the route of (as Paul and I have said so many times) crafting awesome experiences to turn customer's into advocates and forget about the stupid process of getting them to be referenceable.

Advocacy trumps references. (oooh, nice title for a post)
