On the surface it seems funny, and one can only imagine the jokes --- such as your hacked profile showing a prettier face than your un-hacked profile.

However, as your post says, the problem represents a serious issue indeed. Aside from the inconvenience, this kind of thing can hurt precious reputations and damage relationships.

Think I'm overstating the case? Well, just imagine a work associate receiving a hacked Twitter private message - how would the recipient even know the account had been hacked.

Many social networking vendors are surprised by their own rapid growth. That growth requires responsibility to maintain security and ensure this kind of thing doesn't happen. Twitter has not adequately met its responsibilities to protect users and should get on the ball.
