My work MacBook Pro just experienced this very problem.
When I'm at home I connect it to my external 22" CRT,
keyboard, mouse, etc. It stays there until I get back to
work where I use it like a normal laptop.

One day I shut it down to move it to my TV to show my
friends a video, but when I turned the laptop on there was
no video on the laptop display or the TV; it wouldn't
even export video.

I shut it down, closed the lid, opened it up again and it
seemed to work fine. However, after I had shown the
video, I took it back to my office and opened it up again
and the screen was black.

This time the video wouldn't come back on no matter what
I did. I found that once out of every 10 to 12 reboots the
video would just randomly come back.

It's getting repaired by our technician, I should have a final
diagnosis. I figured it was either the video board or a
pinched wire in the hinge of the display.

One thing I did notice (if this helps anyone else diagnose
the problem): When the display fails to come up, the light
on the latch remains on. Normally the light on the latch
turns off the moment the video comes up on the screen.
My guess is that somehow the computer thinks the lid is
still shut and it is already exporting video through the
external connector.

A side note: With Apple laptops, if you turn the laptop on
with the lid closed, it'll automatically turn off the laptop
display and use the external video connector as its main
video source.
