pros and cons
Andy,
It's nice to see your story here at zdnet. I also enjoy being able to post my opinions at zdnet, as I see them from where I'm positioned in the industry. I've been watching BD's first release as well as it's second which I believe is being marketed presently. I look briefly at the ROM devices. I watch the (recorder)devices more closely. Let me write what I see as a con first since I think it's nearing epidemic levels of (business as usual) in the marketing sector. I believe if a vendor advertises a DVD recorder as either oem with(/)software or retail the software to record to the new disc format should be included. So the consumer does not have to purchase NEW software (beyond what is include with the BD recorder) to use the NEW BD recording format on BD media. Now, with "BD" being in it's infancy, release 2, it is still difficult to locate retail (box) versions of any vendors BD (pc recorder)devices. It is MUCH easier on the other hand to find BD recorder devices that are marked oem for sale at many of the decent component vendor stores. It would be nice if the manufacturer of a BD recorder would include at least, in it's documentation for said device (tested software and media) that works with the recorder, and not ten or twenty levels deep in an obscure location on the servers (if included at all for customers), instead of just DUMPING BD oem recorders into the channel without the software or adequate documentation for recording to BD media.

Pro: With the gigabytes of space needed to store the bit count of a 2 hour movie recorded in HD or 1080p format, staggering in yesterdays terms of DVD recordable media. The compact cut of each bit onto the DVD media of the stable blue laser as compared to the old red laser standard is a valuable advance in technology.

Is the purple laser next? Have the same manufactures bringing the BD format to market been investing in stabilizing the purple laser?

regards!
