Well yeah...
You make a good point, but in this instance, they have a LOT of Vista users with machines more than just adequate for running Windows 7, not to mention all the XP downgrades that have been acquired on brand new systems.

This time around the retail side stands a good chance of being significant, especially early on if the marketing is effective. Nevermind that they should want to minimize any early negativity to avoid it being Vista 2.0 / ME 3.0.

As for the "optimal for them" part of the argument, they haven't really changed their pricing structure in years because of the OEM sales. Adjusting it now is a good ... stimulus package, in a manner of speaking (except that it's actually beneficial to both consumer and company).

Point is, there's a good argument for keeping the discounted prices which will still bring in large sums of money for them.
