Well....
"I've switched my systems to Open Office because the ribbon interface was just too annoying for finding the more advanced functions."

Actually, you can disable the ribbon and use a standard interface. But something tells me you don't like Office anyway, so I'm not sure why took the time to comment anyway. Just saying.

"I'm also just plain sick of the obsession with "cloud" everything. The cloud is a solution to a non-existent problem and a big step backward to the dinosaur days of client-server everything. I can't wait until the myriad idiots tying all of their resources up in "cloud" software are sitting on a plane and suddenly realize they can't use any of it while the guy across the aisle happily continues working on his "non-cloud" applications."

While I prefer my applications installed locally as well, those days are numbered whether you like it or not. Even the OpenOffice.org project has mentioned it may not be around forever, and to compete, may have to shift towards the cloud.

The shift has nothing to do with what users want, but for the purpose of raising profit margins and decreasing overhead.

It works like this; if your applications are all hosted online, then developers need only change the application on the server(s) to release updates, and those updates can apply to multiple platforms at once. This greatly reduces development costs, and the media delivery costs way less due to eliminating CDs and DVDs. Downloads only cost in bandwidth, which most large corporations have plenty of anyway.

We may not like it, but as long as the masses don't revolt, it's how it's going to be.
