YES! FINALLY!
About bloody time.

The biggest problems with WiMo phones are:

- No retail OS upgrade path. Microsoft fobs this off to the manufacturer - who has literally NO incentive to offer an upgrade. Thing is, a high end phone is $400 - $800, so the only time people upgrade is when their contract comes up - IF the carrier has the phone you want - because of course, the carriers use phones as a way to entice customers to switch.

- No hardware standards. Everyone builds WiMo phones differently. Even when they have the same features, they're implemented in different ways using proprietary libraries. That makes it nearly impossible for developers to write a "Windows Mobile" app that does anything with hardware. It also means no way to do things like rotation or shake.

- Not enough resources. No smartphone being made today should ship with less than a gig of flash, nor with less than 128MB of RAM. This is basic stuff. As well, it's time for Microsoft to either expand Windows Mobile/Windows CE and make it into a full featured OS, or give it up and port WinXPe to ARM. Also, please - no more 320x240 on a 2.4" screen.

- Lousy UI. That's a *direct* consequence of the previous point. In trying to strip Windows down to fit into 32MB, they've thrown away too much of the essentials. It's too hard to do a nice UI and for a phone, PDA or PMP, that's important. People want a nice experience - these are not business only devices anymore.

It sounds like Microsoft is finally getting at least some of this. If it takes making their own phone and setting the bar high, then do it. Yes, they'll tick off some of their clients, but that's better than ticking off all of their customers.
