What can they say?
No doubt they are seeing very flat sales (at best), and this is simply part of the "get wall street ready" series where they will purport that EVERYTHING is down. That said, their study is suspect in the face of...

the recession driving increased use of open source referred to an IDC survey of 300 senior IT leaders at companies with 100 or more employees that found: "around 68 percent of companies were also planning to increase their use of Linux on the desktop".

According to the OpenOffice download statistics there have been over 40M downloads of OpenOffice 3.0

Depending on who you believe, that is 8% to 10% of the entire installed base of Office worldwide.

This last one is important, it led to $79 Office for everyone not in the enterprise, and has resulted in many sweetheart deals for companies.

What's the point of all this? It's simple, will Microsoft do the hard sell higher price for Windows 7 or will it concede revenue to entice sales and we will see the most reasonably priced OS MS has ever release?. To be a fly on the wall as they debate which way to go.
