Why is it well deserved? Since when is it ok if someone is given something that is not theirs on accident it means it is their right to keep it? I have been overpayed before, and returned the overpayment out of my own volition.
This is indicative of the society we live in, where people believe everything that is a privilege is instead a right. Did MS screw up? Most certainly. Should the former employees return what is not rightfully theirs? Most certainly. If you lost a job at MS, you lost it because you had very little purpose there. Their severances where already generous. Microsoft did not need to layoff people, they chose to use this 'crisis' as an excuse for much needed house cleaning.
