This fits
Enterprise IT never jumps on new software when it first appears, preferring to wait until it has had a chance to work the wrinkles out. We continued to install Win2K for at least two years after XP came out, which explains why there are so many 2K systems still in service. In our operation, we began to install Vista a bit over a year ago, with excellent results. Most of the machines that we are replacing, though, are 2K rather than XP. This year, more XP machines will hit end of cycle, and so I would expect the XP numbers to begin to decline more rapidly.

The big question in my mind is, will enterprise customers embrace 7 when it hits, or take the more conservative approach and install Vista instead? Vista is now the mature OS, stable, reliable, and well known, while 7 will be somewhat of an unknown commodity, especially for those still rooted in XP. If I had to hazard a guess, I would say that those of us who adopted Vista early on will be far more likely to embrace 7 as the jump from Vista to 7 is far shorter than the jump from XP to 7.
