Broadening the appeal
MS has a fine line to walk here. Win7 has the potential to bring back a lot of customers who have been alienated by Vista, and the early indication is that they have the opportunity to do just that.

Supporting older hardware--and providing an upgrade path from XP--would go a long way toward bringing back a lot of PO'd customers.

As well, there's the corporate side. A great many companies have skipped Vista entirely. If Win7 can be adopted without an upgrade from current XP-level hardware it will be a very attractive prospect.
