We need Microsoft
Honestly, we do. I am a Linux and Open Source supporter; not a fantatic. I am no fan of Microsoft business practices, but I do not hate Microsoft. The fact is we need Microsoft and their innovations just as we need Linux and the innovations of Open Source. No matter what state the economy is in we need technology to continue to progress forward on both fronts.

We need Microsoft leading the way because of their market share in so many software technologies, but we need them to stop trying to take over the world and begin to show technical leadership of the industry. Microsoft could easily take Linux and Open Source under their wing, to help this alternative mature and to help guide them down an avenue that is best for everyone. This wouldn't be a threat to Microsoft because what CIOs want is not a software war in the Data Center but cooperation and compatibility between platforms and applications. Microsoft can help deliver this without threatening their profit margins.

We need continued intellectual and financial investment in Linux and Open Source because like it or not they are part of the future of software technologies. As Linux and other Open Source initiatives continue to mature we will see a wider adoption in the industry. We need these platforms to continue to mature not because they will compete with Microsoft but because they will provide options to technological problems that Microsoft may not be best suited to resolve.

Microsoft will not be put out of business by Linux or Open Source alternatives. Linux and Open Source are here to stay, and will only continue to grow in industry adoption and acceptance. Like it or not, both sides are needed in the industry for various reasons. When design and deployment are done right the two can compliment one another and provide cost effective and reliable solutions to the enterprise.

As a result of the current economic impact on business most CIOs, IT executives, managers and admins will focus more on achieving a technical solution to stay in business, and be less concerned with which vendor name or logo appears on the box. A growing number of these solutions will require the deployment of components from multiple vendors. The necessity is growing for Microsoft, Linux, and Open Source to leverage each others strengths for the benefit of the industry.
