The Internet is the Data
Apple and even Google are proving that rich client and
cloud are the natural mix. iTunes is a rich client application
that talks HTTP to get XML data back to populate the
iTunes store. Google's Picasa use HTTP and XML to publish
photos between the Picasa client and Picasa Web. Apple
does it with iPhoto, iWeb, iMovie. The finder even uses
WebDAV to talk to servers. The iPhone and Android are
example of rich clients.

The web is just a database of data. And rich clients are
now the things that talk to the database using HTTP and
XML data. Yes it is true that you still want a web projection
of your data, but that is only one view. On the iPhone, I
almost never use Safari anymore. It is all rich client
applications.

The cloud is simply data being schematized and stored
and accessed over HTTP with XML or JSON output.

Microsoft is simply moving to this model.

(Tangent) Hence, the massive mistake of taking out all of
the applications from Windows. They shouldn't be
removing Mail and MovieMaker, they should be adding Live
integration. They should be adding the ability for any third
party to come along and extend the applications. I would
much have a Windows Mail client that I can simply add
"Facebook" to and now use the application to get all of my
Facebook updates. I want MovieMaker to be open so I can
say "Publish to Flickr Video" or "Publish to YouTube"
alongside "Publish To Windows Live MSN SoapBox".
