Mary Jo Foley Grasps at Straws with Criticism of Sanity
It seems to me you're grasping at straws for a legitimate complaint over a company who just wants some sanity and the freedom of choice in the ever-growing world of internet computing. Then again, "grasping" makes it sound like you actually tried.

Only the technically unsavvy and those who will attempt to vote for George "Epic Fail" Bush a third time use IE as their primary browser anyway, so I find myself having a hard time caring.

Other than MS, the people who are really at fault here are the web designers who exhibit marked indifference to whether 1. their page renders correctly for everyone 2. their page is standards-compliant. I am a former designer and currently work with a company with the same attitude...then again, it's hard to blame them when MS' actions have forced them to jam square pegs into round holes to get them to render properly, and they don't have time to make sure it works on browsers with lesser market share. So, I say Microsoft is most to blame and designers are a distant second.

What do I think IE should do? Eh, make compliant standard, if it can autodetect non-compliant and switch quietly (maybe with an icon in the bar to notify), great. I don't think they should scare my mother away from using it--she wouldn't know what to do anyway.

Anyone who can at least figure out how to install and uninstall programs without having their IT guy hold their hand, however, have little excuse to be putting up with MS BS.
