Of course they can reverse the "damage". It's only perception.
Even the Gartner poll, if you look at more than just the Vista uptake, shows that of those that rolled out Vista, 89% of them said they found Vista to be a very good to excellent OS and value, contrary to their perceptions.

83% said they definately recommend it to others. (I'm paraphrasing but that is the basic results from the polling).

If we have a windows "ME" here, or "damaged goods" I don't think we'd be hearing CIOs telling us Vista provides an excellent OS and value.

Many home users are very satisfied as well. The news is leading with the vocal minority and the sad truth is many of those blogging or at least posting about Vista, have never tried it.

Or have very limited exposure and many times on a machine that even MS would not have said would run Vista. I don't think MS's advertising has been that misleading. If you read the requirements and look at minimum vs. recommended configurations, it doesn't take a genius to understand the lowest possible config is not going to be a great performer. The difference between the two specs are enough to clearly show what you need for a full Vista experience.

I'm not saying Microsoft did everything right during this campaign, they most certainly did not. They did wait too long to talk about service pack one and the existing incompatibilities. They were in a tough spot however. They are not the kind of company that wants to point the finger at the 3rd party vendors and their apps and drivers as the biggest problem, yet in reality it was. Did they now work enough with these vendors? Offer enough incentives for the work they'd need to do to create new Vista drivers?

I don't know, maybe so, but they got the message as soon as their profits started to slow down and we started to see drivers for most things people use today coming at a very fast pace.

Were there things wrong with Vista. Of course, there is no OS released w/o issues. Leopard had many, but it never received the attention and bad publicity due to them.

Most likely since many journalists use Macs, i don't know but there was only one short newscycle on Leopard's shortcomings.

In the meantime, Apple has been struggling with problems, but Vista is still the focus of many negative blogs and talkbacks and will continue.

Maybe it is too late. The ads will need to be perfect, or close to it to gain share back and the majority of the reason why is based on perceptions, not realities.
