It's back to square one
In fact, the new Internet-based platforms (Google App Engine, Microsofts upcoming platform to complement SSDS) are creating an entirely new platform. This change is as profound as the change in the early 80's. To succeed in the coming decade, you better understand how you can leverage these new platforms (like you could leverage the PC in the 80's). I'd say people who argue that you don't have to be a techie anymore to run a succesfull software business, are probably MBA types.

Off course, Gates was a programmer, but he was not only a programmer. It takes more than a programmer to run a succesful business. But it also takes more than an MBA type to build a software success story. You need someone who thinks commercially but understands technology deeply. That was the case yesterday, is the case today, tomorrow, and will still be true the decade after tomorrow's decade.

Just don't count on building your software empire on the PC, and don't think the mobile device is the new platform.

That's my opinion, off course. Did you guess I'm not an MBA type?

As for Microsoft, Google, and the likes, yes, they are entrenched and it will be very hard for any techie, no matter how smart, to catch up. The question is whether that matters. They provide a platform, an operating system if you like. SAP nor Oracle needed their own operating system to succeed in their day.

Filip.
