Since all modern Linux distros are pretty much compatible with each other and each comes with lots of applications that would have to be installed separately in the Windows and Mac worlds, one can pick whatever he think best fits his needs and remains compatible with the rest of the Linux ecosystem. I figure there's probably never going to be more than half a dozen distros with significant market share, but there can be any number of specialized distros each filling a different niche.
