RE: Gates rules out returning to Microsoft
Grain of Salt nails it - the word-of-mouth negative criticism of Vista is hurting it. \

The truth is that Vista + SP1 is, in fact, a great OS. Many people who've upgraded their machines by flattening the box and reinstalling XP would have had as good an experience if they'd flattened their box and reinstalled Vista.

In all reality, the biggest perf and stability problems that Vista users have been suffering from are due largely to the dreadful quality of third-party drivers from hardware manufacturers and the enormous weight of the unnecessary crapware applets, "security suites" (that are eval copies and which leave you unprotected after 30 days anyway), WiFi configurators (that do a far worse job than Vista's built-in Wifi technology), nasty Bluetooth stacks (Toshiba - you should be shot for your dreadful Bluetooth stack that you and Sony use), etc.

Fact is - if you backup your data, flatten your box, reinstall Vista, then SP1, then run Windows update and/or install HW specific drivers, then reinstall your apps (Office, Dev Tools, Image editing software, etc), then your Vista experience WILL be 1000 times better than before.

I know this because I run 7 machines ... from a 5 year old single-core laptop to a quad-core monster, 5 of which are running Vista x64 and all of them are rock solid (since SP1 ;))

Sounds like pain, but re-paving your box is more than worth the investment! And next time you're so keen to assume it's Microsoft's fault, understand that MS don't tell OEM's what to install on the boxes the sell to YOU!
