What if Microsoft had picked a different Chief Software Archiect?

two different people: Booch is more of straight science guy and all aobut programming and modeling software. He was at Rational and now IBM, but i don't know his history before that.

Ozzie, I think is more entrepreneurial and probably has more of the "soft" skills necessary to be a full fledged Architect.

So i think there is a distinction there.

Booch is a scientist. Ozzie is an Architect.

I think, of these two, Microsoft ended up with the right guy for the job. Booch would be great to have on your R&D staff in much the same role he had at Rational and now at IBM.
