I understand, but ...
That said, if MS is going to compete with Google in the search space, they either have to do what Google does a lot better than Google does it (difficult) or they have to do something that Google doesn't do that would provide sufficient reason to use MS' offering either in addition to or instead of Google. Simply imitating Google won't do much.

Normally I would agree with you. However, if MS merely took a first step and made its algorithms functionally equivalent to Google's, it would be a gigantic forward step for MS. It would, among other things, give MS developers an appreciation for the best search techniques I see out there. I guess I'm afraid if MS' current search team tried to do something too different from Google, it would wind up going significantly off track. Quite frankly I don't think MS' Live Search team knows what it is doing. How can a team produce a search service that sucks so badly, and not take quick steps to remedy the situation as soon as it gets feedback from its custmores? And worse, how did MS' current search alogrithms wind up in its production system before being tested against its customers / focus groups? If I was Ballmer, I would be throwing chairs at someone in search.
