I concur
When Windows XP came out I was dead against it because of all the hype I'd heard and read about incompatibility, instability, etc. I'd finally gotten my Windows ME system stable and I didn't want to go through the hassles of starting all over again to get to a stable point. I didn't like the interface, I didn't like the search, I didn't like what I'd heard about it from so many "knowledgeable" voices in the world.

Funny thing is those voices, while right about 4% of the time, were wrong 96% of the time where XP was concerned.

Vista isn't shoddy, it's different. Sure it has some issues, but not nearly as bad as the naysayers would have you believe. Oh and those lovely Mac vs PC commercials? Remember the one about UAC? Well, I usually only get one prompt per software package when installing and then never again for that software package as a normal user. When I installed iTunes, I got THREE separate prompts for elevation. That's not Windows fault, that's Apple's fault for writing a crappy installer that doesn't run all the parts from a single elevated controlling installer.

Anyway, I digress. With reasonably written software, Vista works great (I use it at work, still on XP at home) and while I'm still getting used to some of the differences, I find that there are some things that work better, some things that are the same and some things that don't work quite as well. But give Microsoft a bit of time to focus down on those things that don't work as well and get them up to speed with the service pack changes. I'm sure that when Windows X or whatever some four or five years down the line comes out, we'll see the same old rants and everyone will be "Upgrading" to Vista from the new version.
