DEP is a great idea
DEP is a great idea, as it prevents a large number of buffer overflow attacks - which happen to be the most common type of non-email attack, and a reason why we keep having to update all of the time.

DEP isn't a cure-all, but it will close a large attack vector they've been taking advantage of for a long time.

But yeah, it can cause some headaches - I keep DEP turned on by default for all of my software, and it can indeed cause software to crash or exhibit strange behavior for no apparent reason. Often Windows will catch it and inform you that DEP shut down the program - but often the program will simply crash without telling you it was DEP. I have to keep reminding myself to check DEP if a program crashes.

It does, however, seem to be effective - my computer has yet to contract these viruses.

Of course, I also combine it with a hardware router, UAC, antivirus, and some other stuff, so maybe they're just not getting past my other defenses.

Software developers: Please test your software with DEP enabled! It would be very nice if I didn't have to add so many things to the exceptions list.
