MS is pushing rental because their "Software Assurance" effort is failing..
First, MS made a great revenue stream from people continually upgrading their software. Then people caught on to the "upgrade treadmill" effort - and soon it failed to generate the needed revenue.

Then, MS pushed "Software Assurance" to boost their revenue, until people caught onto it also, and then that failed too.

Now, MS is pushing rental to keep its revenue stream.

How many Lemmings are out there? Will they see through this tactic also? Only time will tell.
