Netdocs' Demise
Netdocs wasn't killed because it competed with Office, though that didn't make it popular. Netdocs was killed because it was slow, didn't work right, and could not figure out a working revenue model.

I should know, I ran the UI test team for it at Microsoft. Netdocs was built on top of existing web technologies but, at that time, the machines weren't fast enough to make it work in a manner that had any real performance.

Brian went to "spend time with his family" on a sabbatical and never returned while the project was killed and the people on it moved into Office. When he left, it was clear that he wasn't coming back. This would have been early 2001.
