No big surprise
I've said it before and I'll say it again here--the big money lies not in selling music players or selling songs. The big money lies in selling DRM. If your DRM becomes the standard, then everyone who sells a player, everyone who sells a song, a movie, a tv show, they all have to come to you and give you a cut of the action.

That's where the smart money is, assuming that DRM will actually have traction and be accepted by the buying public (not a given).

I would expect MS to follow their Zune DRM strategy at least to a point where their method has caught on with the market, and at that point to license it out fairly freely, as was the plan all along.
