Poor Monetization Model
I guess there's truly no more money to be made in operating systems. I heard Vista sales suck so horribly, and apparently Microsoft doesn't think it's financially worth the risk to box up DVDs and stock the stores full of it. You wanna know what, though? This smells last-ditch to me. You can download Fedora 6, Knoppix, CentOS, and Solaris 10. I downloaded all these and they work better than Windows. Being a web developer, I'm on Linux way more than Windows. Solaris 10 not only does updates for you just like Windows, but it's good enough to be considered "tops" for making a mail server. Given Windows recent track record, people already associated Windows with costs and headaches of fixing buggy crap. In a consumer's mind, you're already paying more than the retail price. You're paying the price of putting up with more Microsoft. But given you can already download a bunch of better operating systems for free, why pay jack for Windows Vista in the first place? Why not just hire an overbrained techy and pay him like $100 to install Fedora 6 with OpenOffice.org 2.x for you? What's so hard about a how-to text instruction list and some college student looking for extra dough? Microsoft already doesn't command enough appeal in the consumer market to innovate on people. They'll be suspicous from the get-go and look for Microsoft's devil horns poking out from their new idea, written in the EULA fine print or something.
