IE browser is about dead
With just one feature, RSS, there is a compelling reason to upgrade the internet browser on corporate and government computers. I did so last week on my wife's computer.

As had been reported to me by half a dozen others, it doesn't work well. After 4 or 5 web page views it just stops, then faults - at least it doesn't crash windows. I am tweeking and haven't given up. But youngsters have alread made my wife feel old by saying "only oldsers use IE" so she has already warmed to Firefox.

RSS is important for document management systems like Wiki and I assume Microsoft's sharepoint. When a document is updated, those who are interested in that document know about it by way of a drop down menue (in firefox at least). Then they can view the document and its revision histoy when they want.

I am told that the The State of Washington is about to mandate that all policies and web pages be version controlled. This means that the old versions must be kept for a long period of time (5 years I was told). So far I find none of that in writing but I was told that DIS is offering a solution that looks a lot like Wiki. I have also confirmed that at least one agency completly yanked its online policy manual from the agency intranet in preparation for the mandate.

I appreciate email directly to me mighetto@eskimo.com when folks are concerned about posting directly. ZDnet is doing good with these forums. Zdnet reporters deserve hero status.
