Can no longer compete
Nintendo has dug itself in a hole this time it probably can't get out of. If they have a hardware update to improve graphics to the level of the 360 or PS3 they will not be able to compete on price which was their main selling point before. There will be die hard fans that will buy it, but the public in general will not be interested.

They have already lost most of the hard core gamers and MS and Sony have done a good enough job now of pulling in casual gamers with their media offerings and lower prices. This scenario was obvious a few years ago: market saturation, lack of third party software, zero media capability, poor graphical quality as more people get into HD. Nintendo went for the fast hard buck and now things aren't looking so bright.
