Network Bandwidth
In all fairness, I doubt that any carrier in the US would have been ready to handle the massive amount of data streaming across it's 3G network that iPhone users have generated. If a carrier like Verizon were to offer the iPhone, a lot of people would jump to Verizon and would think they had hit the jackpot with the better data rates they are getting. The truth is that those who stay with AT&T would also probably be just as happy as their data rates should improve, too.
