Not personally
I have never replaced a battery in a notebook that I owned, but my girlfriend tends to keep computers for a long time, and I just replaced the battery in her +/- 5 year old G4 Powerbook recently. The old one would only last a few minutes, she had really run it into the ground. Probably should have replaced it a year beforehand.
