Missing the point, Adrian
While there is some risk to what you say, I think the objective is twofold.

One, drive sales of new units to new customers.

Two, use the iPhone as a trojan horse to get new customers to use Apple products. If they like that new iPhone, they just might get a MacBook next time they need to upgrade their computer.

It's all about longterm strategy. Something Apple is very good at.
