No divine worship here. While you offer up your '$350 gaming system' and 'performance PC' recommendations ... I simply buy a stock PC for (much) less from a royalty OEM. Unless one has specialised needs (as you point out) the difference between 'the best' individual component and a good value alternative is usually 5-10% in capability, likely to be unnoticable in real life. The purchasing power of an OEM soon erodes the apparant advantage of best-of-breed selection.

That is not to say knowledge of good quality components is worthless - if I want to buy a better video card or a new disk then it becomes valuable.

However when it comes to complete systems, packages are typically better value (but be careful with the upgrade limitations).
