Just before a new release of Windows ...
... providing OEM's offer a 'free' upgrade to the next version of the OS. That way you get a copy of XP and an upgrade to Vista/ copy of Vista and upgrade to Windows7 (which might be more expensive we hear).

Also buying a new machine every 2/3 years allows you to re-purpose your old machine as a file server or media centre ... or donation or some such.

The why? Technology advances and enhances.

Caveat: stay one step behind the 'latest and greatest' for best value. When you've bought the 'latest and greatest' ... then select from

- style counts
- I'm a professional, I need a "over-priced item"
- that's my luxury component

wink

Note: there is always something on the horizon which suggests postponing a purchase. Even Bill Gates didn't know what would really make a difference.
